‘Christian Formation in John Wesley’s Preaching Ministry in the Early Methodist Revival’ (NTC)

Supervisors: Dr Geordan Hammond and Dr Joseph Wood.

Through this research project, Thomas explores the formative dimensions of Wesley’s preaching ministry in the early Methodist revival, arguing that preaching was formational as reflected in the response of his listeners, and subsequently for the trajectory of his own life and ministry and the shape and aim of the Wesleyan movement. Unlike studies which focus on Wesley’s sermons as sources of Wesleyan theology and Christian nurture, this study explores how Wesley’s preaching was formational by analysing the language of the responses of his listeners and interpreting them in light of his preaching.
